Caleb Purrington wurde 1812 in den Vereinigten Staaten geboren und wirkte als Maler in der Mitte des 19. Jahrhunderts. Über Purringtons Leben ist in der Forschung nur wenig bekannt; gesichert ist lediglich sein Todesjahr 1875.cite-ref-0-1-1[1]

Besonders bekannt ist seine Zusammenarbeit mit dem Maler Benjamin Russell. Um das Jahr 1848 schufen sie gemeinsam das Moving Panorama Purrington & Russell's Original Panorama of a Whaling Voyage Round the World, welches als eines der größten und bedeutendsten Panoramen seiner Zeit gilt. Aufgrund seiner Größe (das Panorama ist rund 389 Meter lang und etwa 2,6 Meter hoch) erlangte das Werk große Bekanntheit. Das monumentale Rollbild zeigte das maritime Leben und den Walfang im 19. Jahrhundert und wurde in mehreren nordamerikanischen Städten ausgestellt. Es gilt heute als bedeutendes Dokument der amerikanischen Kunstgeschichte und des frühen Ausstellungswesens.
